Do electronic devices cause infertility?
Whether you accept it or not, it is 100% true that most of us sleep with our smartphones. Whereas most people have a habit of scrolling the phone while lying down. Social media and web series have become the main reason for running phones. While we know that, the blue light from gadgets can affect our sleep. A new study has made some startling revelations on the relationship between male infertility and spending time on smart phones till late at night.
What does research say
According to a recent study shared in the virtual SLEEP 2020 meeting, it was found that there is a significant association between late night use of gadgets and the blue light emitted by them and male sperm count. Indeed, the study looked at the effect of phone radiation on a healthy male’s sperm count and fertility.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), infertility accounts for 15 to 20 percent of the general population, with male fertility contributing 20 to 40 percent of this rate. In India, 23 percent of men suffer from male infertility . Data is the need of the hour to understand and treat the reasons behind infertility. According to the study, the use of electronic and digital media devices can have a cascading effect.
According to the study, after evening use of smartphones, tablets showed a decrease in sperm motility, sperm progressive motility and sperm concentration of men. The study also found that the more humans were exposed to the short-wavelength light emitted from these devices, the higher was the percentage of immature sperm . In addition, the study found that sleep duration correlated with total sperm count and overall progressive motility.
Simply put, the light emitted from these devices can disrupt sleep and prevent sperm from reaching their destination, which can increase the rate of male infertility.
Actually, excessive use of smartphones has made us dependent. Radiation can damage a person’s DNA, causing cells to lose their ability to heal on their own. These radiations can also cause miscarriage when it reaches the sperm or egg cell.
Experts believe that, it is not that one should stop using gadgets completely, but they should not use it before sleeping.
